League Alignments: On March 9, 2004, the Executive Athletic Board approved an alignment and made the championship weekend mandatory for all 12 teams listed. The four teams with the best three-game records in the games between teams in their group will play the team from the other group with the best record among the three teams.

 

The Catholic League tiebreaker for hockey will be a five-goal margin of victory.  In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position.   

 

Each team must play the other two teams in its group at least once in the regular-season.  If all teams in the group play each other twice, then both games count towards the league championship seeding. 

 

Tie-breaking Method for Sectional Championship or Playoff Position

 

Tiebreaker: each division will have one (1) champion. In case of a tie in standings, revert back to games played between tied teams.

1a.  If two teams are tied and; A beat B in the only game played between them, A is champion.

 

If A beat B both times the teams played and divisional records are the same then A is the champion.

 

If A beat B and B beat A, the tie will be broken by comparing the margin of victory (up to a maximum of 5 goals, loss equals zero) in the contests between the tied teams only.

 

Example 1a.   

1st Game:           2nd Game:

Team A  3           Team A 0

Team B  1           Team B 1

Margin of Victory:  Team A=+2, Team B= +1

Team A would win the tie-breaker

 

In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position. 

                                                     

If more than two teams are tied;

If A beat C; C beat B; and B beat A, then a three way tie exists. The winner will be selected first by the number of wins against tied teams only.  If still tied the tie will be broken by comparing the margin of victory (up to a maximum of 5 goals, loss equals zero) in the contests between the tied teams only.

 

In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position. 

 

It is hoped this system will encourage more substitutions in games and the team in contention will not jeopardize its position if opponents score.

 

2a. If a tie still occurs (sectional won-lost record the same, goal differential the same, penalty minutes the same), then a point system of plus five (5) of all common sectional opponents will be used (maximum of 5 points, loss equals zero points).

 

Example 2a. 
Maximum of 5 points can be earned per game.  Loss equals zero.

 

3a. If a tie still exists, then compare the margins of victory up to five (5) points in the games against the highest finisher not involved in the tie break.
