Purpose The purpose of the Undergraduate Pastoral Ministry Program at Sacred Heart Major Seminary is to provide its students with a course of study in the area of Christian Ministry. This course of study constitutes a partial fulfillment of the requirements for archdiocesan certification of volunteers and professionals in ministry, and it may be used as a component of the Associate of Arts in Ministry (A.A.M.) degree.
Goals
SHMS strives to instill in its Basic Diploma recipients an ability to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of Sacred Scripture and Catholic tradition, such as:
- Identify resources available (e.g. the Catechism, the documents of Vatican II, magisterial and episcopal documents since Vatican II) and be able to apply them in a ministerial setting.
- Identify the tenets of the Catholic faith.
- Demonstrate leadership and collaborative qualities in a ministerial setting, such as:
- Identify experiences of collaboration in a parish setting.
- Articulate an understanding of leadership as service in a pastoral setting.
- Critique experiences of collaboration and leadership in a pastoral setting.
- Identify leadership skills in a pastoral setting.
- Demonstrate communication and decision-making skills.

** PHL 400: Philosophical Foundations I may be substituted. PHL 242 (Modern Philosophy) can be substituted if student has previous academic experience in philosophy and with permission of the instructor.
Program Requirements
- A minimum of 27 credits must be earned through completion of the course of study.
- A minimum of 14 semester hours of credit must be earned at SHMS.
- The student must maintain a C average (2.0).
- The student must participate in 3 (three) Formation Sessions during the course of study.
