Catholic Students "Go to War" for Seminarians by Lynn Zelek, Fishermen's Fund coordinator MOSAIC, Summer 2009

During Catholic Schools Week, All Saints Catholic School in Canton, Michigan, participated in a "Penny War," with the proceeds going to The Fishermen's Fund scholarship fund for needy seminary students. K-8 students brought in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters with which to wage their war. Much strategizing was done between the grades and the contest came down to a tie between the third and sixth grades. The week culminated in an assembly emceed by Elaine Babbish from Michigan Catholic Radio.
Two teachers from the winning grades, Mr. Arnould and Mrs. Lauster, felt that aside from the obvious math lesson going on all week, the children learned valuable lessons about working together and giving back to the community. All Saints Principal Deborah Davidson was proud of the students, pointing out that even in the midst of all the frivolity and competition, the children never lost sight of what was really important.
I spoke at the assembly about the generosity at All Saints where the students have been continually supportive of getting the word out about The Fishermen's Fund and praying for vocations. Seminarians Eric Tarachowski and Wes Brown, who receive tuition support from the fund, were the highlight of the afternoon. They spoke about life at Sacred Heart and what brought them to realize their vocation to the priesthood. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to our future priests as they spoke with joy and enthusiasm about their life and their passion for serving the Church.
Finally, Eric and Wes gratefully accepted a check for $3,515.96 on behalf of The Fishermen's Fund. Fun was had by all, and every student at All Saints was proud of the contribution they made to the fund and to the future of our Church.
During the past Christmas season, The Fishermen's Fund launched its second Annual Appeal to continue to replenish the pool of tuition funding to needy seminarians, diaconate candidates and lay ministry students. Those who feel moved to support vocations through the Fund are encouraged to call 313-883-8779. Volunteers are needed to spread the message among the parishes-another great way to get involved.
