More Than Just Candy
by Jeremy Meuser

As the sun died away on October 31, our neighbors came out in their Hallow's Eve best for Sacred Heart's annual Halloween celebration. We welcomed them to our foyer, decked out in autumn gold and pumpkin orange, for trick-o-treating fun. Children enjoyed seminarians costumed in a variety of characters: Gandalf, Superman, Spiderman and the pope all made appearances. Some costumes were quite inventive: a home-made Sponge Bob and a convincing sheriff assembled their costumes from random items found around the seminary.

Seminarians distributed candy from plastic tubs to over one thousand eager children, all excited to play their part in the festivities. But more than candy was exchanged that evening.

"Did you see those smiling faces? I loved it!" said seminarian Anthony Kathawa. He offered his drum for pounding by children waiting patiently for their turn in the candy line. The widest smiles were found not at the candy bin, but rather in the exchanges between seminarian and guest. Four-year olds looked up in amazement as Spiderman stooped to greet them. Children called for the Cat 'n the Hat, reciting lines from favorite Dr. Seuss books. Spiderman attempted to climb a wall at the request of one of the youngsters.

Our neighbors—children and grownups—blessed us that night with their presence. Experience proved to be the educator that evening, reinforcing an important maxim: the minister is always touched, always changed, by the ministry. We know that for some families, the candy was a distant second compared to the joy of being surrounded by such a fantastic phantasm filled with caring faces. Many generous hearts contributed to the event. Hundreds of families donated candy. Others offered decorations, hot chocolate or cookies. Financial donations helped with last minute needs. A group of committed seminarians drew these resources together and offered to God and neighborhood a secure trick-o-treating environment. A special thank you to all, and we look forward to next year!
