League Alignments:
The Catholic League tiebreaker for hockey will be a five-goal margin of victory. In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position. See league manual on chsl.com.

Each team must play all other teams in its Division at least once in the regular-season.

*Honor Teams will be introduced and given medals after each Showcase and Championship Game.

Tie-breaking Method for Sectional Championship or Playoff Position

Tiebreaker: each division will have one (1) champion. In case of a tie in standings, revert back to games played between tied teams.

  1. If two teams are tied and; A beat B in the only game played between them, A is champion.

If A beat B both times the teams played and divisional records are the same then A is the champion.

If A beat B and B beat A, the tie will be broken by comparing the margin of victory (up to a maximum of 5 goals, loss equals zero) in the contests between the tied teams only.

Example 1a:

1st Game: 2nd Game:
Team A 3 Team A 0
Team B 1 Team B 1
Margin of Victory: Team A=+2, Team B= +1

Team A would win the tie-breaker.

In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position.

If more than two teams are tied;

If A beat C; C beat B; and B beat A, then a three way tie exists. The winner will be selected first by the number of wins against tied teams only. If still tied the tie will be broken by comparing the margin of victory (up to a maximum of 5 goals, loss equals zero) in the contests between the tied teams only.

In the event there is still a tie, the least number of penalty minutes in games involving tied teams will determine playoff position.

It is hoped this system will encourage more substitutions in games and the team in contention will not jeopardize its position if opponents score.

  1. If a tie still occurs (sectional won-lost record the same, goal differential the same, penalty minutes the same), then a point system of plus five (5) of all common sectional opponents will be used (maximum of 5 points, loss equals zero points).

Example 2a:

Maximum of 5 points can be earned per game. Loss equals zero.

PLAYOFF OVERTIME PROCEDURES – For all CHSL tournament games that finish regulation tied, sudden victory overtime will take place beginning with one 8-minute period of 5 on 5. If the game is still tied, the second 8-minute sudden victory overtime period will be 4 on 4 and any other overtime periods will be 8 minutes of sudden victory 3 0n 3. Sudden victory overtime periods will be played to determine a winner in accordance with the following procedures:

  • At the end of regulation play, the two teams go to their locker room.
  • The ice is to be resurfaced prior to the beginning of overtime play.
  • All overtime periods shall be eight minutes sudden victory.
  • Change goals for the first overtime period and each subsequent overtime period.
  • If the game remains tied at the end of the first overtime period, there shall be a two-minute rest period (with teams remaining at their bench), change goals and continue with the second overtime.
  • At the end of each set of two eight-minute overtime periods, the ice shall be resurfaced. Teams may go to their locker rooms.
  • The same ice cleaning format is used throughout OT.
  • Carry-over penalties will apply.
    • o If the first 4 on 4 period starts with a team down two players, the two-man advantage will be played 5 on 3 and will remain until penalized players return to ice.
    • o Teams revert to 4 on 4 on first stoppage once shorthanded penalties expire and both teams are at full strength. (By rule, teams cannot play below on ice strength of 3 skaters plus a goalkeeper).
