Field Hockey Playoffs

The Catholic High School League field hockey season is moving toward championship time, with the Cardinal and Bishop Championship races beginning to take shape.

Semifinal games in both championship brackets are scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, before the league gathers at The Hawk in Farmington Hills on Saturday, October 3 to crown its champions. The Cardinal Championship is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by the Bishop Championship at 5 p.m. The semifinal matchups remain to be determined as the regular season enters its final stretch. (CHSL)

Cardinal Championship

The AA Division has developed into an interesting race led by Greenhills School.

As of September 19, Greenhills sits atop the CHSL standings with a perfect 4-0 league record. St. Catherine of Siena Academy follows at 2-1, defending Cardinal champion Academy of the Sacred Heart is 2-3, and Regina is 0-4. Regular-season games remain before the semifinal pairings are finalized. (CHSL)

Greenhills has put itself in strong position entering the final week of league play, while St. Catherine continues to pursue one of the top positions in the division. Sacred Heart, meanwhile, enters the postseason race with the experience of having made a championship run just one year ago.

The Gazelles captured the 2025 Cardinal Championship, defeating Greenhills 1-0 in the championship game. That victory ended an impressive four-year run by Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard, which won consecutive Cardinal titles from 2021 through 2024. Sacred Heart also won the Cardinal crown in 2020. (CHSL)

Bishop Championship

The Central Division race features six programs with plenty of recent CHSL championship history among them.

Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard currently sits at 2-0 in the league results posted by the CHSL, while Mercy is 2-1. University Liggett is 0-1 and Cranbrook Kingswood is 0-2. Detroit Country Day and Marian currently have no league results reflected in the posted standings, leaving important games still to be played or entered as the postseason approaches. (CHSL)

Fr. Gabriel Richard has already recorded a 3-0 victory over Cranbrook Kingswood and a 3-2 win over Mercy. Mercy has responded with convincing victories of its own, defeating University Liggett 2-0 and Cranbrook Kingswood 6-0. (CHSL)

The Bishop bracket features some of the most successful field hockey programs in recent CHSL history.

University Liggett is the two-time defending Bishop champion, winning the title in both 2024 and 2025. Marian captured the Bishop Championship in 2023, Cranbrook Kingswood won in 2022 and Mercy earned the championship in 2021. (CHSL)

Fr. Gabriel Richard adds another intriguing storyline. After winning four consecutive Cardinal Championships from 2021-24, the Fighting Irish are now competing in the Central Division and pursuing a Bishop Championship. (CHSL)

With regular-season positioning still being decided, the final days before the playoffs will carry added importance. From Greenhills' unbeaten run in the AA Division to a Central field filled with recent champions, the 2026 CHSL field hockey postseason has plenty of storylines still to be written.
