2025 CHSL Tom Kelly Athletic Director of the Year
Regina High School's Emily Frikken Honored as 2025 CHSL Tom Kelly Athletic Director of the Year
The Catholic High School League proudly announces that Regina High School Athletic Director Emily Frikken has been named the 2025 recipient of the prestigious Tom Kelly Athletic Director of the Year Award. This honor recognizes Frikken's exceptional leadership, dedication to student-athletes, and commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive athletic environment.
A 2009 alumna of Regina High School, Frikken returned to her alma mater six years ago, bringing a passion for empowering young women through sports. Since assuming the role of Athletic Director in 2022, she has been instrumental in advancing the school's athletic programs and facilities.
Frikken's tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including spearheading the development of the Diane Laffey Athletic Complex—a $4.5 million project aimed at enhancing facilities for tennis, track, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, and softball. The first phase, featuring eight new tennis courts, was completed in 2024, with subsequent phases underway.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, Frikken is celebrated for her unwavering support of student-athletes. Known affectionately as "Coach Em," she is a constant presence at games and meets, offering encouragement and guidance. Her philosophy centers on positivity, encapsulated in her mantra, "Positive thoughts equal positive results," which has resonated deeply with students.
Frikken's impact extends beyond athletics. She introduced Regina to the Kairos retreat program, fostering spiritual growth and community among students.
The Tom Kelly Athletic Director of the Year Award, named after the esteemed Harper Woods Notre Dame Athletic Director and coach, honors individuals who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship and leadership within the CHSL.
"Emily has been a driving force in creating an environment where female athletes feel empowered to succeed," said Regina Principal Ann Diamond. "Through her leadership, she has dismantled barriers and stereotypes, paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive athletic community."
